Document Import and Export

There are number of easy ways to upload and download documents using Writer. This includes import documents from the desktop and importing from other cloud drives. Also, download and upload password protected files right inside writer. Please make sure you choose the supported file formats before you get started with importing and exporting documents. 

Supported file formats

Writer supports the following formats:

For document import:

.docx, .doc, .docm, .dot, .dotm, .dotx .rtf, .odt, .txt, .html, .htm, .tex

For document export:

.docx, .rtf, .txt, .html, .odt, .epub, .pdf

Import files to Writer

You can import files stored in your computer to Writer and work on them anytime you want, from anywhere.

Import from desktop

To upload files from your desktop,

  1. Click File.
  2. Select Upload Document from the drop-down menu. The Upload Document pop-up will open.
  3. Select the From Computer option and click Choose File/Drag and drop to import files from your desktop. Your local file directory will open.
  4. Select the file you want to upload and file will be added in your Writer account.

Upload from web URL

You can import web documents to Writer using the URLs of web documents. This feature, however, supports only specific web document formats (.docx, .doc, .docm, .dot, .dotx, .dotm, .odt, .txt, .html, .htm, .tex) and the file size cannot exceed 10MB.

To upload web documents,

  1. Click File.
  2. Select Upload Document from the drop-down menu. The Upload Document pop-up will appear.
  3. Select the From URL option.
  4. Copy and paste the URL of the web document in the field and click Upload.

Import from cloud drives

Apart from importing documents from your personal desktop now you can easily import your documents from service such as Dropbox, box, Ever note, etc.

To import documents from cloud drives,

  1. Click File > Import from Cloud Drives.
  2. In the pop-up window that appears, select the required cloud drive and authenticate it to import your documents.

You can import password protected files inside Writer. Follow the steps shown above to upload documents. Once the file is imported, you'll be prompted to enter the password. Click OK to open and edit the .docx file.

Download Documents

To download documents

  1. Click File > Download as.
  2. You can download documents in the following formats, .docx, .rtf, .txt, .html, .odt, .epub, .pdf.

Download password-protected documents

To download as a password-protected file

  1. Click File > Download as.
  2. Choose to download as Password Protection File.
  3. In the Download Options Popup, choose the required format (MS Word or PDF format) and set password.
  4. Click Download.

How to convert scanned images of documents or forms into Writer templates?

Writer does not support importing images directly. Instead, you can try out the following options:
1. Insert the image in a Writer document and resize it to fit a page. Then, download the document as a PDF.



2. Use the tools available in the OS (Preview in Mac/Photos in Windows/ Chrome browser) to open the image, and either save the image or Print the image as a PDF.

3. You can also make use of online tools like PDFConverter, Online2PDF, JPEG to PDF, etc., to convert the images to PDFs.
